STEP 1 : Start with clean, dry skin. We recommend a light astringent, like
Sea Breeze, to remove any excess oils from the skin. Pull all loose hair
away from the face. Make sure to wear an open neck shirt to allow for
easy makeup application to the neck. (Pic A)
Step 2 : Looking at the back of the prosthetic (Pic B), make sure any
excess foam is removed from areas like the nostrils, etc.
Step 3 : Your now ready to begin gluing the appliance down. You can use
Spirit Gum, Pro-aide type adhesives and Silicone based adhesives. We
Recommend our Pro-adhesive for most situations and we'll be using it in
this application. You will start by applying adhesive to the center area
of the back of the prosthetic (Pic C). In this case, it's the nose. You can
also apply adhesive to your skin if you want extra hold. While the
Pro-adhesive is still wet, press the prosthetic evenly and firmly onto your
face. Hold in place until the adhesive dries.
Step 4 : You can now begin to glue down the rest of the prosthetic.
The idea is to glue it down evenly in the the correct position. Foam Latex
is quite stretchy allowing it to fit many facial sizes and shapes. Start with
the forehead. Apply adhesive to the center of the back of the prosthetic
and press into place. Now work on the left or right cheek (Pic E). Apply adhesive to the back and position the prosthetic into the correct place. Press firmly onto the skin. You will continue this process until all the approx. 1/4 Inch of the edges remain (Pic D). By leaving all the edge work for last, this will allow you to take the time on the edge work as this is important for a good blend onto the skin.
Step 5 : Carefully glue down all the edges. Glue only approx. 1 inch at a
time, so you can make sure it lays down smoothly. Be careful when
applying adhesive around your eyes.
Step 6 : Now that the prosthetic is glued down, your ready to seal the
surface. Foam latex is in essence a big sponge, so you need to create a
"skin" on which the makeup will be applied. You can use either liquid
latex or pro-adhesive for this. We prefer the pro-adhesive as it is thinner
in consistency and dries quicker. You can use a white makeup sponge to
apply a thin layer of sealer or you can use the round red makeup sponges
found at most retailers. This sponge leaves a great texture to the surface
of the appliance. Make sure the blend your sealer material out onto the
exposed skin slightly (Pic F). By going over the edges repeatedly with the
sealer, the edges will blend onto the skin flawlessly. Allow to dry between
layers.
Step 7. Allow the sealing material (we used pro-adhesive here) to dry
completely (Pic G). A hair dryer will quicken this process.
Step 8 : Apply loose powder to the entire surface (Pic H). Both Latex &
Pro-adhesive dry with a tacky surface. We recommend using translucent
facial powder as it has no pigments to change makeup colors. Baby Powder
will work, but may alter your makeup. Brush off any excess powder.
Step 9 : Your now ready to apply your makeup base. Foam Latex
Prosthetics require special treatment. Regular cream makeups shouldn't
be used of any latex product. We recommend using Rubber Mask
Greasepaint or RMG, as it is designed for this purpose. PAX paint can
also be used, but for this application, we'll use RMG. We'll cover PAX in
a later segment. Start by deciding what base color you want. This is your
overall color you want to have. For the Ogre here, we mixed a light flesh
tone with some blue and white to create this sickly tone. RMG can be
thinned with 99% isopropyl alcohol for easier application and to create
washes. Apply the RMG over the entire surface of the prosthetic and onto
your skin (Pic I). If your ears will show, make sure to put makeup on them
too! Press the makeup sponges firmly onto the surface, making sure it gets
into all the wrinkles and crevices.
Step 10 : RMG has a great deal of Castor Oil in it and requires a great deal
of powder to set it. Don't be shy with the powder here. Using a powder
puff, press the powder onto all areas with RMG coverage (Pic J). Dab the
puff, Don't drag it. Once all the shiny spots of RMG are covered with
powder, brush off all the excess powder. You can blot the surface of the
makeup with a damp tissue to help remove stubborn powder.
Step 11 : You are now ready for shading. In this case, we're using an
airbrush to apply our shading colors, although you can use makeup
brushes for this as well. Choose a color that is darker than your base color.
You can simply add a small amount of a dark color like brown or black into
your base color. This creates a natural looking shading tone. Either Spray
or apply with a brush your shading color to all deeper areas of the face
like eyesockets, temples, under cheekbones, nostils, etc. (Pic K) We also
added some spots and splotches over the surface of the face. This adds a
level of realism to the new skin your painting.
Step 12 : You should now add any highlights you may wish. A highlight
color should be lighter in tone than your base color. Again, by adding a
light tone like white or yellow to your base color, you'll get a good
highlight color. Apply this to higher sections of the face like brows, bridge
of the nose, cheekbones, etc. We did not use a highlight color on the
Ogre application.
Step 13 : To continue with the mottling of the skin, Take a cheap
disposable chip brush and cut the bristles to a length of approx. 3/4 inch
as shown in (Pic L). By mixing the RMG with 99% isopropyl alcohol, you can
create a wash of color. This will allow you to make a "stain" of color rather
than harsh dots that look fake. Dip your brush into the wash and test it
by flicking the bristles onto a paper towel. You want to see translucent
color. Practice this technique until your comfortable with it. The less
makeup in the brush, the better. You can always add more dots, but you
can't remove them easily. Slowly build up dots of color wash on the entire
surface on the face (Pic M). Be careful to not get this in your eyes! Very
lightly powder the surface and remove the excess.
Step 14 : If your FX FACE came with teeth, horns, etc. This can be a good
time to glue them in place. Although super glue has the best hold, we
don't recommend using it once the prosthetic is on your face. If you wish
to use super glue, preglue the teeth/horns in before application. Apply
adhesive to the back of the tooth/horn and press firmly in place (Pic N).
Hold until glue sets.
Step 15 : Apply any color to the teeth/horns unless they are pre-colored.
Seal with Gloss medium for a nice shine! (Pic O)
Step 16 : Finish off the Look!! (Pic P) Style your hair or add a wig.
Custom contact lenses always add something special
to your new face! Don't forget costuming! Your now ready
to hunt for your next victim!!
